About Examination Reforms & Assessment Booklet
Introduction:
The aim of assessment in the culture of our schooling system will shift from one that is summative and primarily tests rote memorisation skills to one that is more regular and formative, is more competency-based, promotes learning and development for our students, and tests higher-order skills, such as, analysis, critical thinking and conceptual clarity. The primary purpose of assessment will indeed be for learning; it will help the teacher and student, and the entire schooling system, continuously revise teaching-learning processes to optimise learning and development for all students. This will be the underlying principle for assessment at all levels of education. [NEP 2020, 4.34]
Assessment refers to any process of gathering information about students learning. National Education Policy 2020 envisaged that assessment should be 360o in nature. Hence, the education system Shall plan to assess physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual, cultural development of the child. The process of assessment shall make the students to feel free and enjoy in participating assessment. For this purpose, children’s performance Shall assesses in three dimensions i.e. Assessment of learning, Assessment for learning and Assessment as learning.
Why changes required in Assessment:
The existing assessment process make students to mug up concepts for examinations instead of analysing and express on their own way. There is a dire need to revise the existing examination system from rote learning to critical and creative thinking abilities. There Shall be a shift from content-based assessment to competency-based assessment and make examinations as a joyful activity.
Process of assessment:
NEP 2020 stated that assessment should measure the achievement of competencies and learning outcomes leading to attainment of curricular goals. Assessment should be constructive developmental learning focused, age appropriate. One size fit for all approach is not suitable to assess 360o assessment. Hence the process of assessment Shall shift from mear paper pencil test to project works, group assignments, Oral assessments by utilising different tools for assessment.
Types of Assessments:
Students’ performance Shall assessed by two different ways.
- Formative Assessment
- Summative Assessment
Frequency:
- Formative assessment Shall conduct four times in a year i.e. August, October, January and February.
- Summative Assessment Shall conduct two times in a year e. November and April.
Note: Fourth formative for class X will be treated as Prefinal test.
Structure and Pattern of Formative Assessment:
Formative Assessment is a competency-based test to assess students’ performance in multiple dimensions.
